MultiChoice Malawi was established in 1996 as a locally-owned franchise. The operation provides Malawian customers with a choice of five DStv and three GOtv packages. Local operations are run by a staff of 60 Malawians working in Blantyre and Lilongwe and supported by a nationwide network of agents and installers.
How to create social value
MultiChoice Malawi has grown hand in hand with local communities and today employs 94 employees through 7 retailers, 3 branches, 152 agencies and 58 accredited installers throughout the country.
Together this team works to make the best local and global content available through 7 DStv packages and affordable family entertainment through the GOtv offering, which provides crystal-clear digital satellite TV to a large segment of the population through 3 dedicated transmitter sites.
Growing Malawi’s creative industries
A major focus of the company’s social investment efforts is igniting Malawi’s creative industries through upskilling emerging filmmakers. Its flagship initiative is the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF), which develops the skills of young filmmakers through a year-long learnership programme at the Lusaka-based MTF Academy of Southern Africa.
Chimwemwe Mkwezalamba and Jonathan Kapumba did Malawi proud as part of the inaugural MTF student intake in 2018, with Mphatso Makamo taking up the baton for the year ahead. Following the successful completion of his learnership, Jonathan also secured a 3-week Bollywood internship. These students and the many other talented young Malawians that will follow in their footsteps will help create a pipeline of local content. Malawian viewers were able to enjoy true homegrown programming on Zambezi Magic which showcased favourites such as Know Your Star and The Grapevine, as well as on other DStv channels which previously aired the renowned Malawian movies Seasons of Life, The Last Fishing Boat and The Road to Sunrise.
Enriching Malawi lives
The idea of ‘sanka wekha’ – you choose – has guided our approach whereby customers can choose their preferred payment options, content packages and service options. This also includes a unique senior citizen programme that provides special assistance to senior MultiChoice Malawi subscribers by collecting their payments at home instead of having them queue at a payment counter.
This is just one of the ways in which MultiChoice Malawi is enriching lives in local communities. Other initiatives include overhauling the intensive care unit at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre and donating kits to local netball teams.
