Back in 1992, before digital satellite TV had even launched in Africa, MultiChoice Africa and a local Batswana conglomerate joined forces to bring next-generation TV to Botswana. Rooted in Botswanan soil and nurtured by the hopes of a nation, MultiChoice Botswana was born with the vision of proactively contributing to the country’s economy and playing a major, positive role in Botswana’s future.
A pioneer in cutting-edge video entertainment, MultiChoice Botswana introduced the first-ever pay-TV service to the country. Determined to use this as a vehicle for economic investment and the broader upliftment of local communities, the broadcaster immediately forged mutually beneficial partnerships with the national regulator, government stakeholders and service providers.
As a result of this solid foundation, MultiChoice Botswana was able to spread its wings, providing employment for local people while simultaneously upskilling employees through training and development.
How we create social value
Today, MultiChoice Botswana employs close to 150 people,
who together have built a proudly Botswana business that
comprises close to 50 direct sales force agents, 128 accredited installers and 9 agents across the country, in addition to a flourishing partnership with Botswana Post. In the last financial year, the company’s direct contribution to the Botswana GDP was in excess of US $3.6 million.
Growing Botswana’s creative industries
MultiChoice is not only investing in Botswana and her people today, but tomorrow too. The company’s flagship corporate social value (CSV) initiative, the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF), aims to ignite Botswana’s creative industries by inspiring and nurturing talented young people to work in film and TV.
In 2018, Nikita Mokgware and Serena Serene Mmifinyana represented Botswana in the year-long, fully-paid learnership programme at the MTF Academy for Southern Africa in Lusaka. More recently, Masego Mohwasa and Lorato Orapeleng joined the world-class African academy to fly the Botswana flag.
Together these students, and the many more who will follow in future, will help create a pipeline of strong local content, produced for Batswana audiences. In addition to supporting young filmmakers through MTF, MultiChoice Botswana also showcased local productions on the Zambezi Magic channel, which in 2016 aired Botswana’s first locally produced programme, We Are All Blue, and Date My Family Botswana in 2019.
Enriching Malawi lives
Enriching lives has always been a driving principle for MultiChoice Botswana and the business continues to honour this promise through initiatives such as the Realeboga Scheme, which to date has benefitted over 80 families in their time of need. Through our agency and installer network we have created multiple streams of income for over 100 citizens who have been able to create job opportunities for other Batswana throughout the country.
